异辛烷的规范名称为 2,2,4-三甲基戊烷（C8H18，CAS 540-84-1），是一种骨架高度支化的 C8 烷烃。这种清澈无色的液体沸点约 99 °C，不溶于水，可与其他烃类以任意比例混合。
高度支化的结构使其极难自燃，因此在辛烷值标度上被定为 100，而正庚烷为零。由于所有辛烷值都是以这两者的混合物为基准测定的，发动机和燃料实验室依赖纯度毋庸置疑的参比物质。异辛烷化学惰性强且在紫外区透明，因此也是标准分析溶剂，被写入乙酸–异辛烷法过氧化值测定和茴香胺值测定等油脂检测方法。
99.9% 牌号的 2,2,4-三甲基戊烷含量不低于 99 wt%（典型值 99.9），异辛烷（C8）含量不低于 99 wt%。其限值为：轻组分（C6 及以下）0.0150 wt%，芳烃 0.0200 wt%，溴指数 5 mg Br/100 g，硫 5 ppm，水分 50 ppm，不挥发物 1 mg/100 g。馏程从不低于 96 °C 至不高于 107 °C；苯胺点为 77–80 °C，密度为 0.69–0.70 g/cm³。
除辛烷值参比燃料外，它还用于光谱分析及其他分析工作、油脂检测，用作非极性溶剂和萃取剂，以及合成原料。
