About This Product
DEA (CAS 111-42-2, C4H11NO2) carries two hydroxyl groups and a single secondary amine. It is a viscous liquid or a solid with a low melting point, smells faintly of ammonia, absorbs moisture and is fully miscible with water.
Among the gas-treating amines it sits between MEA and MDEA. Its vapour pressure is lower than that of MEA, so less solvent is lost, it stands up better to degradation by carbonyl sulfide and carbon disulfide, and regeneration needs somewhat less energy. Against that, it is a weaker base and takes up acid gas more slowly. Its other established outlets, as the raw material for diethanolamide surfactants and as a neutralising amine in cosmetics, have shrunk considerably. A secondary amine can react with nitrosating agents to give N-nitrosodiethanolamine, a compound of toxicological concern, and DEA and its derivatives are therefore restricted in cosmetic products in the EU and other markets.
Current uses include gas sweetening and acid gas removal, surfactant and emulsifier production, metalworking fluids, cement grinding aids and corrosion inhibition.
BG Petro Chemicals supplies DEA to an agreed specification on assay, monoethanolamine and triethanolamine content, water, colour and iron, with the grade confirmed at quotation.
