Buying Base Oils: A Grade and Viscosity Enquiry Checklist – BG Petro Chemicals news and insights

A base-oil enquiry is easier to compare when every supplier is working to the same grade, test limits and delivery brief. A product code alone does not describe every requirement of a lubricant or grease formulation.

Begin with the application and grade

State whether the material is intended for engine-oil blending, hydraulic or circulating oils, grease, process use or another application. Include the full grade name. The Base Oil 150N-HVI and Base Oil 100N-MVI, for example, belong to different viscosity-index classes; a shared neutral-oil naming convention does not make their properties identical.

For heavy blends, identify whether the requirement is for a heavy neutral or Bright Stock BS-MVI. If a formulation already specifies a particular source or approved material, include that information rather than asking for an unrestricted equivalent.

Compare viscosity at the same reference temperature

Send the required kinematic-viscosity range together with its reference temperature and test method. A value measured at 40 °C is not directly comparable with one measured at 100 °C. Include the viscosity-index requirement and any relevant limits for pour point, flash point, colour, acidity and carbon residue.

The product specification is the starting point. Ask for available batch results and check that the units and methods on the analysis correspond with the agreed specification. The buyer's technical team should determine whether a candidate grade is suitable for its formulation.

Add the commercial and delivery details

    • Product name and full grade code.
    • Required limits, units and test methods.
    • Trial quantity and expected commercial volume.
    • Preferred pack format and receiving arrangements.
    • Destination, delivery basis and required timing.
    • Documentation needed for technical review.

Bulk, drum, IBC, ISO-tank and other options depend on the product and offer. Confirm the actual pack, quantity and route with the sales team before treating an indicative option as an agreed shipment.
