About This Product
n-Octadecane (CAS 593-45-3) is a single linear paraffin, C18H38, supplied at 99.0% minimum purity. Its limits are 0.1% for moisture, 20 ppm each for chloride and sulphate, and 10 ppm each for iron and total heavy metals. Molten, it forms a clear liquid, colourless to light yellow.
Because it melts and solidifies just above normal room temperature while taking up and giving back a large amount of latent heat, it is chosen as a phase change material. It is the core of encapsulated PCM finishes for temperature-regulating textiles, goes into wallboards, plasters and other building products that even out indoor temperature, and fills cold-chain packs. Beyond thermal storage, it serves as a non-polar hydrocarbon solvent.
This specification does not give the melting point, phase change temperature or latent heat; ask for them before designing a thermal store, and confirm the colour limit against a batch certificate. Also confirm whether the product is delivered molten in bulk or as a solid, and test the chosen batch in the intended system.
