About This Product
Petroleum jelly, or petrolatum (CAS 8009-03-8), is a semi-solid hydrocarbon mixture made by deeply refining the wax extracted from crude oil distillation residues and blending it with lubricating oils. This first-class grade is a white paste solid with a buttery texture, and it remains usable for 2 years when kept in a cool, dry place.
It is a base and texturising material for balms, creams, lip and hair products, where it forms a water-resistant film and gives body to anhydrous formulas. Industry uses it as a raw material for daily-chemical and fine-chemical products, as a lubricant and as a protective coating against moisture.
No pharmacopoeia grade is stated, and the drop melting point and other properties are confirmed against a batch certificate on enquiry. In the UK and the EU, petrolatum may be used in cosmetic products only when its full refining history is known and it can be shown that it is not made from a carcinogenic substance (Cosmetics Regulation, Annex II), so cosmetic and pharmaceutical buyers should obtain the refining documentation or a pharmacopoeia certificate before ordering.
