About This Product
Fully refined paraffin wax (CAS 8002-74-2) starts as the wax separated when lubricating oil fractions are dewaxed, and is then deoiled and hydrotreated until less than 0.5% oil remains. Chemically it is a mixture of straight-chain n-alkanes, predominantly in the C20–C40 range. Melting grades span 50 to 68 °C, and the wax is delivered white, as slabs, pastilles or granules.
Residual oil is what gives a wax colour, odour and a tendency to sweat, so taking it below half a per cent sets both the quality of this grade and where it can go. Fully refined wax is white, keeps well in storage, does not stain and has practically no odour. That is the level of refining food-contact and cosmetic work calls for, although compliance for a specific use should be confirmed at enquiry, and it is why candle makers choose it for candles expected to burn without off-odour and take fragrance cleanly. The n-alkanes crystallise as large, regular plates, which makes the wax hard, glossy and brittle and gives castings a very smooth surface. Pick the melting point by format: lower for container candles, higher for pillars and tapers.
End uses run from candles of every format to food packaging and coatings, cosmetics and depilatory wax, crayons, polishes, rubber compounding and moisture barriers. BG Petro Chemicals supplies fully refined grades to agreed limits on oil content, melting and congealing points, needle penetration, odour and colour.
