    About This Product

Semi refined paraffin wax (CAS 8002-74-2) stops part-way through the refining sequence: it is deoiled, but not given the full hydrotreating and decolourising treatment of the fully refined grade. Melting grades cover 50 to 68 °C, the wax is delivered as slabs or granules, and typical oil content is 0.5–1.5%.

That retained oil accounts for every difference from fully refined wax, and it brings drawbacks and benefits in equal measure. On one side it leaves a slight smell of petroleum and an off-white to cream tint, and over time it can work out to the surface as sweating, which rules the grade out of food contact and delicate unscented cosmetic work. On the other, it plasticises the wax a little, so castings release from the mould more easily and large pieces crack less, and it lowers the price appreciably. Where a candle is scented and dyed, the fragrance hides the slight odour and the dye hides the tint, so the balance usually favours this grade, which is why it is so widely used in volume candle manufacture. Choose the melting grade by candle format, exactly as with fully refined wax.

Alongside votives, tealights and scented or coloured candles, it is used in rubber and tyre compounding, paper coating, board sizing, fire logs and general industrial work. BG Petro Chemicals supplies semi refined grades to agreed limits on oil content, melting point, congealing point, penetration, odour and colour.
