About This Product
Trioctyl trimellitate (TOTM, CAS 3319-31-1) is a viscous, clear liquid made by esterifying trimellitic anhydride with 2-ethylhexanol. The key structural point is the number of ester groups on the benzene ring: three, against two for a phthalate.
The extra ester chain gives a much heavier molecule, and heavier plasticisers are more permanent. TOTM is more tightly entangled in the PVC matrix, has a far lower vapour pressure and diffuses much more slowly, so it stays in the compound under conditions that would drive out a conventional plasticiser. In practice this sets the heat rating. TOTM-plasticised PVC stays flexible in continuous service at 105 °C and 125 °C, temperatures at which a DOP compound would lose plasticiser and become brittle. Cable makers rely on it for high-temperature electrical cable and under-bonnet automotive wiring. It is also used for medical tubing and blood bags, where extraction into the contents has to be kept to a minimum. Against these benefits, it costs more, its higher viscosity makes processing more demanding, and its low-temperature flexibility is slightly poorer.
End uses include insulation for high-temperature wire and cable, automotive wiring, medical tubing and blood bags, gaskets and industrial hose.
TOTM is offered against an agreed specification on assay, acidity, water, colour, volatiles, viscosity and specific gravity. BG Petro Chemicals can provide current specifications, safety data and available batch documentation on request, and pack size is confirmed with the quotation.
