About This Product
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2) is a clear, oily ortho-phthalate ester. Compared with the octyl phthalates it has a lower molecular weight and higher volatility, and it solvates PVC and nitrocellulose more strongly.
Its small molecule is both its strength and its weakness. DBP penetrates and gels a polymer quickly and at a lower temperature. That is why it was valued in plastisols, in nitrocellulose lacquers and adhesives, and as a fast-fusing additive blended with a slower primary plasticiser. The same mobility means it migrates out of finished articles and evaporates from their surfaces over time. Parts stiffen and shrink, fogging films form on vehicle glass, and the lost plasticiser escapes to the environment. DBP is also classified as toxic for reproduction category 1B and is listed in REACH Annex XIV. As a result it has been withdrawn from consumer uses and is restricted in toys, childcare articles, cosmetics and food-contact materials. Whether it can be supplied at all depends on the end use being authorised in the destination market.
Where its use is permitted, DBP serves in industrial adhesives and sealants, nitrocellulose lacquers and printing inks, and as a processing aid.
BG Petro Chemicals offers DBP against an agreed specification covering assay, acidity, water content, colour and specific gravity. Every order is subject to authorisation and end-use verification. Current specifications, safety data and available batch documentation are provided on request, and pack size is confirmed with the quotation.
